How safe it is to get the H1N1 vaccine?

Many people have been arguing against getting the H1N1 flu vaccine citing two reasons: 1) the flu is found to have only mild to moderate symptoms and most recover without even taking any medication. Getting the flu would give them natural immunization against the virus anyway. 2) the vaccine has been produced for the first time and there has not been enough time to test before it is being administered to humans on a large scale.

However, to address the first concern, the medical community says that one may not really know how serious symptoms one might develop from the H1N1 influenza virus. Each person has a different experience. Therefore, developing immunization using a vaccine is much safer than developing it naturally by first falling sick. Secondly, according to the authorities, the H1N1 vaccine is said to be completely safe as it is produced the same way as the normal seasonal flu vaccine is made each year. The same companies that produce the seasonal flu vaccines are said to have produced the H1N1 vaccines therefore one can assume these companies know what they are doing!

I am hearing many parents are against getting the H1N1 vaccine. The medical community urging everyone to go and get the shot and the parents thinking against that has now confused me totally. What if there are any adverse reactions from the vaccine? Is there a plan B available, just in case? Someone?

My friends and me are also debating if we should get our kids get the H1n1 vaccine. It seems we are more and more agreeing on just staying at home as much as possible and avoid the flu. We have cut down on going to the malls and parties, but the kids have to go to the school. So there is a risk. Our kids our from 4 to 12 years age and so they do not fall in the critical group, which makes us think let us wait and see how the vaccine results instead of being the first ones in the line and become the guinea pigs!

I was just writing in the other topic in this forum that the topics on this site are important and I hope more people would join in to discuss and let us know what they think. Most often the medical community is guided by lobbyists and they scare the people so much who then do not even think about a plan B! I appreciate someone bringing that up and making us sit up and think. Personally, I am opting to go and get the vaccine for my family members and myself because by next year, I am assuming this strain of H1n1 virus would become part of the normal seasonal flu vaccine. We would not have to get two vaccines next year. I believe the vaccine this year is safe... just my 2cents!

The news sites are reporting that the H1N1 flu is above the epidemic levels and hospitalizations are increasing by the day. There have been deaths too from the H1N1 flu, but upto now no adverse effects of the vaccine have come out. By now I am assuming thousands of health care workers would have already taken the shot and if there was something wrong with the vaccines, it would have come out in the open by now. I am leaning more and more towards getting the vaccine now...
