Even dogs can be infected with the flu virus. According to the CDC, the “canine influenza virus” is an influenza A H3N8 influenza virus that was originally an equine (horse) influenza virus. This virus has spread to dogs and can now spread between dogs.
At least for now, this H3N8 does not infect humans. But as is the nature of viruses, they can mutate and jump from one species to the other. Therefore infection to humans cannot be completely ruled out. However, the risk from the H3N8 to humans is very low and not a single case has been ever reported of a human infected with the canine flu virus.
