Why no panic from the seasonal flu that kills many each year

Even though the regular seasonal flu kills almost 250,000 people a year, no one seems to be as concerned as they are with the flu from the 2009 H1N1 virus!

Is this because of the human psychology of fearing the unknown?

Why no panic from the seasonal flu that kills many each year

There is a vaccine available that is more or less effective in preventing a severe seasonal flu pandemic. Hence the damage that can be done by the seasonal flu is more or less known and can be contained.

There is no immunity today against the H1N1 flu which can result in millions of people falling sick around the world. In extreme cases, it can cause businesses to shut down, overloads on the health care systems and facilities and hundreds of thousands of people may lose their lives. Fortunately, the H1N1 virus is found to be not very dangerous, and nature gave us some time to develop the vaccine. The bad news is the viruses can mutate and suddenly take a more severe and dangerous form without any notice to human kind.
